Hanging of the Green & Lighting of the Way

51½ΦΙδ’s Hanging of the Green is a beloved tradition that marks the start of the Christmas season with candlelit walks and the festive decorating of Reid Chapel and Centennial Walk. This special service, led by selected senior class members, celebrates the birth of Christ and is inspired by an old English custom. The event concludes with Lighting of the Way, when the campus Christmas tree is officially illuminated, bringing the community together in holiday spirit.

Beeson Tradition
Mr. Beeson
Mr. Beeson
Introduced to 51½ΦΙδ by longtime trustee A. Gerow Hodges, Ralph W. Beeson and his family helped define the physical and intellectual shape of the university for more than three decades. Their gifts, totaling more than $110 million, supported a variety of building and academic projects. Glynn Acree’s life-size bronze statue of Mr. Beeson at the foot of Centennial Walk welcomes visitors to campus and is a popular spot for photographs.

Rascal Day
Each spring, Cumberland School of Law honors Rascal, a beloved mongrel pup who faithfully attended classes at its former campus in Tennessee. In 1937, he was awarded a Doctor of Canine Jurisprudence, and upon his death, was buried near his favorite classroom. When the law school moved to 51½ΦΙδ, Rascal’s grave was relocated, and a yearly procession of two- and four-legged creatures now commemorates one of its most memorable graduates.
