Professors guide students in an exploratory journey of the Christian Scriptures and empower them to discover the texts’ interpretation and application.

Scripture as a Source of Wisdom for Today

In an increasingly complex world, Christian leaders across every profession must be able to draw on the deep moral, ethical, and theological resources of Scripture. Biblical Foundations helps students:

  • Understand the overarching narrative of Scripture and its key figures, events, and themes
  • Explore the literary beauty and theological depth of biblical texts
  • Appreciate how Scripture has shaped — and continues to shape — the Western intellectual and cultural tradition
  • Engage Scripture critically and faithfully, considering both ancient contexts and contemporary applications
  • Reflect on how biblical wisdom informs their own faith, character, and vocational calling

Vocational Integration

Biblical Foundations fosters connections between faith and professional life. Students are invited to wrestle with questions such as:

  • How does Scripture inform how I serve others in my profession?
  • What does it mean to pursue justice, compassion, and stewardship in my chosen field?
  • How can biblical ethics guide decisions in leadership, healthcare, business, education, the arts, and beyond?
  • How can I think theologically about complex cultural issues I will encounter as a professional and citizen?

A Transformative Educational Experience

Biblical Foundations is taught by dedicated faculty with advanced expertise in biblical studies. The course offers:

  • A dynamic, interactive learning environment grounded in careful reading, discussion, and critical reflection
  • Opportunities for personal spiritual growth through engagement with Scripture
  • A deepened capacity to think Christianly about life, learning, and leadership

Formation for Lifelong Impact

51½ÖÉä graduates consistently report that Biblical Foundations is one of the most formative experiences of their academic journey. It challenges them to think deeply about what it means to love God and neighbor, and how to live out that calling through their work and relationships.

In every profession, from nursing to law to business to ministry to public service, Biblical Foundations helps students ask the right questions and pursue lives of faithful engagement with the world.

Dawn McCormack
“Biblical Foundations is central to who we are at 51½ÖÉä. We want graduates who can engage thoughtfully and faithfully with the complexities of life, and this course is a vital part of preparing them to do so.”
— Dawn McCormack, Dean, Howard College of Arts and Sciences
